 Edmund L. Whelan III
November | Edmund L. Whelan Celebrates His 15 Year Anniversary at A.J. Martini "Fresh with a degree in civil engineering from Union College, Ed joined us in 1993 as an assistant superintendent to Paul Pothier on our Nott Memorial project at Union College. What an unbelievable project to get your feet wet!! This type of project happens once every ten to twenty years. You could sense immediately there was tremendous potential with Ed. He took his job very seriously, but also knew how to have fun. At the Nott, he had several responsibilities. One of which, he took charge of the roof restoration. This included precise documentation of the location of each and every one of the 709 illuminators. The illuminators were one foot long lead coated copper, 2" diameter tubes built into the domed roof allowing natural light into the Nott, only interrupted by colored glass, installed in each of the illuminators. Under the watchful eye of Carl George, Professor of Biology and campus expert on the Nott Memorial, and Ken Guditz, architect for Finegold Alexander + Associates, Ed had the illuminators removed, rebuilt and installed with the precision of a surgeon. It was this type of experience and success that led to Martini being awarded the restoration of the dome in Building 7 at MIT. The project manager at MIT, Ron Catella said, "Ed's the kind of person I would be very proud to have as a son or son-in-law". Ed continues to find himself on some of our most challenging projects. He was the lead-superintendent on 25 Channel Center, the new 14-story, cast-in-place concrete condominium project completed with Bruner/Cott for Beacon Capital Partners. He has moved on to build other significant projects such as the Chinatown Community Education Center. He has also become a recognized expert in concrete construction. You can find him speaking and as part of panel discussions at conferences such as Build Boston and at MIT. He lives in Melrose with his wife Ann, their two children, Ned and Autumn and their well known dog Hank, who has been to our jobsites more than me!!"

 Philip Balboni
June | Philip Balboni Celebrates His 10 Year Anniversary at A.J. Martini Phil joined Martini 10 years ago, back in 1998. He came to Martini upon the recommendation of Ron Rich, whom Phil had worked for at Rich Construction. Phil studied construction management at Wentworth, where his dad is a professor. He's our no-nonsense, by-the-book project manager who always finds himself assigned to our most challenging and complicated projects. At first, we were not too sure how to handle his serious approach to project management. But now, we understand its part of what makes him a tremendous success in our industry. We feel very fortunate to have him part of our team. It was Phil that helped orchestrate the six million dollar "summer slammer" renovation project over 11 weeks at Harvard Law School several years ago, where 42 carpenters started temporary protection, moments after the completion of commencement ceremonies and 35 pipe fitters worked the entire job over the 4th of July weekend! This was a tough job that required a lot of well-organized resources with no room for mistakes or delays, as 600 law school students were arriving August 21st - ready or not. Phil was also the project manager who tackled some of our other challenging projects such as Channel Center - Parcels 5 & 6, Four Points Sheraton and currently the Saint-Gobain project in Northborough. Phil continues to handle these tough projects with ease. He's also been instrumental in hiring some of our newest assistant project managers. Several of our assistant project managers have earned their wings working along-side Phil. He?s great at teaching his skills to the next generation of project managers. Perhaps he gets this gene from his dad? Phil plays a mean game of tennis (I learned first-hand last winter) along finding time to be a soccer coach. He resides in Haverhill with his two children, Ryan and Julia.
